About the event
2020 should have been a productive year for the European project and EU-China relations. The European Union began this year reinvigorated, having weathered the threat of Brexit and forwarded an ambitious agenda on climate change and the economy; whereas China doubled down on its relationship to Europe with key gatherings scheduled and a plan to seal a long-awaited bilateral investment agreement by the end of this year. However, the global outbreak of COVID-19 has brought both Brussels’ and Beijing’s agendas to a sudden halt. Worldwide confirmed coronavirus cases topped 2 million while Europe witnessed some of the highest fatalities rates. The international health crisis and its enormous socio-economic fallout put the continent’s central machinery at loggerheads with member states’ immediate national interests. Meanwhile, with its long history as both a driver and target of geopolitics, Europe is also wary of China’s objectives in the region. Going forward, how will this disrupted “year of Europe” unfold and how will national and supranational governments work together to cope with the challenges ahead?

Dr. Cui Hongjian has been associated with China Institute of International Studies (CIIS) since 1998. He is a senior research fellow and Director of the Department for European Studies, CIIS. Dr. Cui served as First Secretary and director of the Office of Political Affairs in Chinese Consulate General in Mumbai, India and Chinese Embassy in Jamaica from 2003 to 2007. His research fields include Europe politics, economy and security, China-EU relations and China’s foreign policy.

Dr. Wang is Vice Chairman of China Association for International Economic Cooperation under Ministry of Commerce, Vice Chairman of China Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA). He is also the Dean of Institute of Development Studies at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China and Vice Chairman of China Talent Society.
